Potential Concepts (OUGD103)

CONCEPT 1

BRIEF:

Discovering the pubs of Leeds. Being completely new to the city, Fresher students will be wanting to know where to go and socialise in Freshers Week in order to get to know the new people they have met. There are pubs to suit everyone. And Freshers will want to know how to find them!

WHO NEEDS TO KNOW?:

Fresher students who are not familiar with Leeds. Male and female.

WHAT DO THEY NEED TO KNOW?:

Students will need to know what different pubs can offer them. For example, food, gigs, pub quizzes, real ale, darts, pool/snooker etc. And importantly, the location of the establishments. Product(s) will need to be informative and useful.

WHAT WILL THEY RESPOND TO?:

Products fueled by the pub environment enforced by graphic design that is orientated at the younger generation. Potential for a Freshers pack of sorts, including useful and promotional material.

WHAT RESEARCH IS REQUIRED?:

Information about the pubs of Leeds is paramount. This information can be gained through primary investigation by visiting the pubs myself. Quantitative research can be gained from qualitative research collected from opinion-based questionnaires. Secondary research can be collected in the form of pub reviews on the internet etc.

CONCEPT 2

BRIEF:

Certain aspects of my life and other aspects of life around me in general have changed over the year. The aspect of change is to be communicated to Freshers and how much it can happen to a first year.

WHO NEEDS TO KNOW?:

Fresher students. Male and female.

WHAT DO THEY NEED TO KNOW?:

Certain aspect of life which can change drastically when coming to university such as finances, sleeping patterns, alcohol intake, work load etc.

WHAT WILL THEY RESPOND TO?:

Potentially a set of 4 dimensional illustrations communicating change. They could be shaped in the form of a book of some sort, timeline. Some form of information graphics basically.

WHAT RESEARCH IS REQUIRED?:

Primary research into other peoples experiences of change throughout the year would be crucial. Similarities in peoples experiences of change could determine what is communicated to Freshers as a stereotype for what changes over the year. Secondary research would be more difficult. Perhaps student finance statistics over the years. Blogs and forums of other students experiences as Freshers could certainly help.

CONCEPT 3

BRIEF:

First impressions. Meeting new people is a fun experience based on what you learn about them as a person.

WHO NEEDS TO KNOW?:

Fresher students as they are forced into meeting new people by moving away from home. Male and female.

WHAT DO THEY NEED TO KNOW?:

My own and others' personal experiences of meeting people and the first impressions experienced. Also things that people told me about themselves that I remember. The intention being that they are amusing quotations and experiences in order for Freshers to see the funny side of getting to know people. An insight into my own nostalgia mill hopefully make them look forward to this time next year!

WHAT WILL THEY RESPOND TO?:

I would have to experiment with different ways to attribute different first impressions to different people. As this relies quite heavily on experience and quotation the project has the potential for typographic exploration.

WHAT RESEARCH IS REQUIRED?:

Research would solely consist of me grinding out everything I can remember from my own experiences of my own Freshers Week and meeting new people as well as pestering other for information about people they met.
